The Mets try again to take their second consecutive series as they face the Marlins for an early afternoon game. The game will be a rematch of a great game earlier in the season when Josh Johnson barely pitched better than Santana, who got the loss thanks to a dropped catch that led to two runs. Anyway, it should be a good one.
Santana has been amazing so far this season as he is 3-1 with a .70 ERA over 25.2 IP, 6 BB and 37 K (league leading). Last time against the Marlins he lasted 7 innings, walked one and then struck out 13. Last season he pitched 23.0 IP to the tune of a 3-0 record with a 1.96 ERA, 7 BB, and 24 K. Here are the stats the Marlins have against Santana: Cantu 5-23, 8 K Helms 2-14, 7 K Ramierez 2-15, 6K Uggla 1-17, HR, 10 K Hermida 4-10, 3 2B Bonifacio 0-8, 3K Santana can handle this lineup, the test will be whether or not the Mets can handle Johnson. Johsnon has been the ace of the Marlins staff this season going 2-0 over 4 games with a 2.20 ERA, 28.2 IP, 5 BB, 29 K. He has been incredible and last time against the Mets he threw a complete game and only allowed one run. Here are the Mets stats that they somehow got on Johnson: Beltran 2-15 Delgado 1-15, 2B Reyes 3-13 Wright 2-15 Church 1-6, 2B Castillo 2-5 If the Mets can score some runs and support Johan, that should get the Mets the win, of course that is easier to say then to do against Johnson who is becomeing one of the premier pitchers in the game, and a great pitcher against the Mets. The Mets take on the Marlins for game two of the series following a nice 7-1 win last night. The win last night makes the season record now tied between the Mets and the Marlins, and as we know from last year, the key to winning a division is beating your division, so the Mets hope to continue that plan tonight as they take on Ricky Nolasco behind Livan Hernandez. The other important part of this game tonight is that a win not only secures a second consecutive series win but also puts the Mets back at .500, where they want to be.
Livan Hernandez had a terrible outing his last time out and it really wrecked his stat line which is now 1-1, 7.31 ERA, 16 IP, 4 BB and 7 K on the season. His best outing so far on the season was his first which was against the Marlins, so the Mets look for him to strike again tonight. Last time he got the win in 6.2 innings of work allowing 2 ER, 3 BB, and striking out 4. In 2007, Hernandez was 2-0 against the Marlins with a 3.21 EERA over 14.0 IP, 2 BB and 5 K. Here are the numbers the Marlins have against him: Uggla 4-15, 3B, HR Helms 5-13, HR Hermida 4-13 Cantu 0-6 Gload 2-6 Ross 2-6 The Marlins have now lost 7 straight, so their hitters are probably starting to feel the pressure and that could be a very good thing for Hernandez who is a very patient pitcher. His success agaisnt the Marlins of late has generally come from his ability to recongnize that they are young and impatient. If he can do the same thing to them again tonight, he should be able to quiet this offense again. The Mets tonight are going to try to repeat Nolasco's last outing against the Mets. Earlier this season (also against Livan) he lasted only 5 innings while giving up 4 ER, 2 BB, and striking out 2. On the season he is now 1-2 with a 6.88 ERA over 4 games, 21.0 IP, 6 BB and 17 K. In 2008 against the Mets he went 1-2 over 6 games and 5 starts with a 3.48 ERA over 33.2 IP so he does have some success against the Mets and the Mets cannot sleep on him. Here are the numbers the Mets have against him: Reyes 13-29, 2B, 3B, 3HR Beltran 8-26, HR Wright 12-28, 3 2B, 3 HR Church 2-10, 2B, HR Murphy 4-11 Castillo 6-9 The Mets have a lot of power numbers agianst Nolasco which is good because they are still doing a pretty poor job of knocking the ball out of the park (which is a direct correlation with the lack of big innings) as they have now hit 12 in 19 games. Reyes can really see the ball well off of Nolasco so look for a lot of table setting tonight. Tonight could be a good example of whether or not the Mets can actually hit with RISP. Lets Go Mets! Fry the Fish! Monday, April 27

So that was my poor attempt at a pun but good win tonight. The Mets beat the Nationals tonight by the score of 7-1 thanks to a few things. First and foremost, John Maine. After two bad starts, he came out and started to throw, and throw well to the tune of 6 innings of work with no earned runs really dropping his ERA. What I was very proud about was how Maine handled the first batter of the game. He should have been out but Sheff dropped the ball and then the wheels could have fallen off but Maine worked out of it.
The offense in the next inning was very impressive. The Mets were agressive, going first to third on a few occasions. They kept the rally going and got it to the point where they got some pop hitting a grand slam. The only problem was the Mets then fell quiet until the 8th inning, but when you put up a six spot in one inning, it is a very good sign. The Mets now put themselves in a position to keep winning because they are building momentum (winners of 3 of 4) and the Marlins are now slipping out of control dropping 7 in a row. Krod made it interesting in the ninth with walking two, but it felt so good to get that win tonight and it was a good win as well. Also props tonight to Wright who had a good 2-4 night with no strikeouts an RBI and then a triple in the 8th. Lets Go Mets!

The Mets open up a series with the Marlins tonight after failing to sweep a team for the third time this season. The Mets will also look tonight to win consecutive series for the first time this season. Anyway, the Marlins have cooled off from the last time we saw them. They were 3-0 and after we played them 5-1 where they stayed for a while until recently where they have been on a 6 game losing streak. They are ready to push back and the Mets need to be ready to keep pushing them down. The Mets will be sending John Maine to the mound, looking to rebound tonight and he will face Anibal Sanchez.
John Maine has already faced the fish this season and did a pretty good job at it, especially when comparing that outing to his next two. He with 5.0 innings, allowed 2 runs, walked one and struck out 5. On the season he is 0-2 with 15.2 IO, 13 ER, 9 BB, 11 K. In 08 against the fish he had a 4.1 IP outing where he walked one, struck out 6 and only allowed one run. In 2007 he was a 3-0 in 4 games against the fish with a 2.45 ERA, 25.2 IP, 12 BB, and 38 K. Here are the numbers the Marlins have against Maine: Uggla 4-17, 2B, HR, 7K Ramierez 4-18, 2 HR Hermida 5-13, 2B Paulino 1-6 Ross 0-4, 2K Maybin 0-2, 2K The trick for Maine is to remember that he can pitch effectively and can do it against the Nationals. As soon as he gets on a roll he should be fine its all about he he establishes himself from the start. If he starts on the wrong foot, well he'll probably be like that all night. This goes for the hitters as well but the Mets need to start make in game, and in inning adjustments to not only their opponents but to the adjustments that their opponents are making. The Mets will try to back up Maine tonight by lighting up Sanchez who is 1-1 on the season in three games and has a nice 2.50 ERA with 8 BB and 13 K. Last time out against the Mets this season he held the Mets scoreless over 5 innings allowing only 4H, 3BB, 5K. Last year against the Mets he lasted only 3.1 innings against the Mets where he allowed 3 runs and walked 4 with 7 Hits. Here are the numbers the Mets have against Sanchez: Reyes 2-10, 2B Church 7-13, 3 2B, HR Wright 2-10, 5K Delgado 3-8 Beltran 3-7, HR The Mets need to channel their play from Saturday where the capitalized on mistakes, and were able to keep rallies going with hits. If they can rally tonight, and if Maine pitches, well, then the Mets can win, but if they fall to their weaknesses again, of bad starting pitching and no clutch hitting, then they will have a long night. Lets Go Mets! Fry the Fish!

This past Friday I was supposed to go to Camden Yards. Last season was the first season in probably about 5 or 6 years that I didn't make it down to Camden Yards in Baltimore at least once. I lived my life practically outside of Baltimore and DC so I have no excuse for not making the trip. I really wanted to go also to give a review of the stadium, and article that is a year overdue, because last season they made a lot of updates in the AV development of the park. They had new color scoreboards around the decks, two new color monitors on the center field scoreboard and a huge new color monitor on the right field wall for the out of town scoreboard, which used to be a bunch of lightbulbs and was very hard to read. The changes have made the amazing stadium even better.
Well this trip was going to have to wait. I went to a gas station because gas is a pretty useful thing when you need to drive somewhere (it was going to be my first time driving to the game as well since I moved outside of DC, when I lived outside of Baltimore I took the subway, or they call it the Metro here, down to the park). I drive a Windstar minivan and when I opened the metal covering that leads to the top of the gas cap, I was staring at a Yellow Jacket making a hive in that space. That's right, I was transporting a live hive. So I quickly shut the flap, called my friends and said I could not go to the game and then went off to Target to get some spray and kill the nest in my van. I have to say, out of all the problems that can happen to a car, this is probably my favorite. Yellow Jackets 1 Elliot Watching Live Baseball 0 Sunday, April 26

Well my cynical side beat my optimistic side as the stastics prevailed and Oliver Perez was not able to handle the Nationals today and the Mets were not able to handle Jordan Zimmerman. Before we get to Perez the hitting today was frustrating, a theme with the Mets this year, because the Mets put themselves in situations today the score runs and they just could not sustain a ralley. After being able to do that yesterday, it seemed that maybe they could carry it over to today but they couldn't. This killed the Mets early because Zimmerman was struggling early and if the Mets jumped on him early, they might of had a shot of breaking his confidence and driving the Mets home to a win. On that same topic, Perez had the same problem. He was givin a 1-0 lead after the first inning and then he gave it right back to the Nationals. The next inning he was down 2-1 and had 2 outs then gave up more runs off of a ralley of hits by the Nationals. He needs to work though his problems quickly because patience is going to run thin with him. The end result of all of this is of course that the Mets lost but they still won the series. Now they are back to two games below five hundred, and they need to just keep winning series so they can make up some ground on their balance sheets. Lets Go Mets, please start swinging or hitting soon.

The Mets guranteed that they would win the series against the Nationals last night with a second straight win and this time between a good, effective, (but not great) performance by Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey wasn't great but he was able to keep the ball down when he had to and was able to keep the Mets in the game the entire time and got the win which he deserved, and saved himself from this do or die time for the rotation. The real story for this game in my mind though would be the way the Mets took advantage of National's mistakes during play. Every time they made some sort of blunder the Mets got a run or got on based and then didn't let the situation just go away, the worked at it and got more runs. For this team to have a successful season, they are going to need to keep working at that. So in other words, the Mets handled their two big demons in this game with effective starting pitching and hitting in the clutch. The only thing that drove me a little nuts was the lack of real extrabase hitting. I am a big fan of small ball, but even a small ball team needs some sort of power because it is the balance of the two that brings championships. Hopefully the Mets will find their swing soon.

For the third time this season, the Mets will attempt to sweep a team and build a winning streak. They have not done this yet, but they are hoping to make it happen tomorrow and, this may surprise you (or not, depends on how cynical you are), statistically speaking it could be a tough day for the Mets tomorrow. The Nationals will be sending rookie "sensation" Jordan Zimmerman to the mound as the Mets will be sending out the enigma named Oliver Perez.
Oliver started off the season with a horrible start. Then he was brilliant. Then he was brilliant but then faltered. On the season he is 1-1 over his first three games with a 7.80 ERA, 15.0 IP, 13 ER, 12 BB, and 15 K. He will try to follow Pelfrey and drop his ERA and be effective but its against a team that he has struggled in the past against. Last season he faced the Nationals three times and in 15.2 innings, allowed 15 earned runs over 9 BB and 14 K. Here are the numbers the Nationals have put up against Perez: Dunn 6-25, 2 2B, 3 HR Kearns 8-27, 2B, 3 HR Willmingham 7-22, 2B, 3 HR, 8 BB Belliard 4-17 Dukes 0-2 Just about every National has a good hitting record against Perez. He is going to have to climb over the numbers and more importantly, climb over his own head to shut down this team and be the pitcher the Mets are not only paying him to be, but to be the pitcher the Mets need him to be. Especially with an unknown foe, the Mets will really benefit from a good outing. The Nationals will be sending out Jordan Zimmerman to the mound. In Spring, he went 1-1 over 5 games and 14 innings where he allowed only 2 walks and struck out 20. His ERA during that time was a very nice 3.14. His last start was his first MLB start of the season as he got the win over 6 innings of work, allowed 2 earned runs, walked one and struck out 3. He had one MiLB start this season in AAA where he was very human and allowed 3 ER over 5 IP, walked one and struck out 4. The Mets for some reason get very confused with new pitchers. Hopefully they will be able to hit him and back up Perez and get the sweep. Lets Go Mets. Sweep the Nationals! Saturday, April 25

The Mets will try to make it two in a row today as they take on the Nationals for the early afternoon Saturday game. The Mets ended a four game slide last night and a win today is key for a few reasons. First, the Mets will then win the series if they win today. Second, the Mets then can start to put that four game slide behind them with a win today. Most importantly, it shows they can win without Johan, and for that one that means Pelfrey has to play like a champion today, which we know he can, he just has to focus, and we just have to hope he is healthy. He will be going against Cabrera today.
Pelfrey really needs to buckle down today. So far this season, he some how has managed a 1-0 record despite his 10.0 innings pitched with 9 ER, 6 BB and 5 K. Last season he want 1-2 against the Nationals in 4 games with 26.2 innings pitched. During that time, he allowed 7 ER (2.36 ERA), walked 11 and struck out 12. The key for Pelfrey is to keep the ball in yard, to keep the base paths empty and he can rock it. Here are the stats the Nationals have against Pelfrey: Zimmerman 5-24, 2B Kearns 5-16, HR Belliard 3-15, 2B Willingham 3-10, 3B, HR Dukes 2-3, 2B, HR Willingham went 0-1 in a PH last night, lowering his season BA to .167. If I was Acta, I would let him play against the Mets because he usually works miracles against us. That being said, I am very glad that Acta didn't play him last night. Kearns is the other player on the Nats that always worries me. If Pelfrey can hold down his demons, and the Mets support him with runs, then the Mets should win this game. Daniel Cabrera is a pitcher I am very familiar with him. I used to live outside of Baltimore (now I live outside of DC) and back then I used to see Cabrera pitch all the time. When Cabrera is on, he is lights out and he can strike out players no problem. He is can strike fear for two reasons. First, he is big. I think hes about 6'10, but he also has a full frame, in other words he looks like a football player. The other reason he is scary comes from his lack of control. On days he isn't on, he is worse than Oliver Perez as he will throw balls everywhere. This season he is 0-1 over 16.0 IP with 8 ER (4.50 ERA), 8 BB and 6K. He has never faced the Mets but do not fret because many Mets have faced him: Cora 13-30 Sheff 6-23, HR, 7 BB Reed 2-8, 2B, 3B Castillo 3-7 Delgado 2-3, 2 HR Church 1-2 The key to Cabrera is that the players have to gauge him early. Take pitches the first time through the lineup and see where his fastball is. If he isn't on, then wait during the game because Caberea will walk himself into trouble. If he is hitting his spots, then the next way to get to him is to be aggressive. Of course with that the Mets could get into a lot of strike out trouble. The game should be interesting as both of these pitchers are looking to make their mark. Lets Go Mets! Beat the Nats!

The Mets finally turned it around today as Johan Santana turned out another great performance. This time he went 6 innings, allowed only one run (putting his ERA at a pretty .70) and still manage to strike out 10. In fact, the first batters he faced in the game he struck out. That is really incredible. He also, sort of, got some run support tonight as well. The Mets won by the score of 4-3, and while Santana was out there they got 3 runs. While that doesn't really sound like a lot of run support, it was more than his last two starts combined. Tonight the bullpen looked a little human, well, more like Krod looked a little human as he allowed two runs in the ninth inning. The difference betwen Krod and the Mets last year is that Krod didn't allow three runs he allowed only two runs and kept the Mets in the game and didn't blow the game.
Overall I am happy. The Mets could have played a lot better. Several times in the game they had the bases loaded and didn't do anything with it. They got in the win columm though, they won the first game of the series, and now they have to focus on winning tomorrow. Since its still April, it is still time to take each game one at a time and just focus on winning. Not on the Marlins or anyone else (not that anyone is right now, or not that anyone is focusing on other teams in the division). We are at the point in the season that focusing on winning will bring a first place position and will bring the playoffs. We just have to keep winning. Tomorrow is a big day as Mike Pelfrey looks to show all of us that he can pitch and that there is more than one pitcher in the starting rotation. Friday, April 24

Thursday was just baffling. The Mets lost their forth straight and got swept by the Cards. They also put up 8 runs but still lost by 4. The problems first started with Livan. He was just not effective from the start of the game as he allowed 7 runs in 4.1 innings putting the Mets in a hole. The Mets then started to make a comeback but Green could not get his job done as he allowed an addition 5 runs. At that point the score was 12-5. The Mets continued to rally during the game as they scored 2 runs in an inning and then 3 runs in another game. At that point the Mets have had 8 runs.
I was hoping I was going to have more time in the season to make this post, my annual rant, but here it goes. There is no reason when a team scores 8 runs that they should be in the losing column. The pitching, between Hernandez and Green both really put the Mets in a bad spot. If there was anything good to take away from this game was that the by the end of the game the Mets remembered how to score runs and how score runs in bunches. How they scored though I think is showing another problem with the team. They scored by homers, which is something the Mets as a team have been lacking at. If they can hit more homers, then obviously they will score more runs in bunches. That should be a goal for this team moving foward in the season (not to swing for the fences, but to score runs in bunches).

After a frustrating loss on Tuesday the Mets decided that the best solution to the problem would be to lose another game and put themselves in a position to be swept. Once again this was a frustrating game for the same reasons as the day before. This game solidified in the public mind that the Mets have two big problems that need to be resolved. The first problem is the starting pitching which was just John Maine. I don't know whats wrong with him but he needs to get back into shape and very fast. Giving up 5 runs in 5.2 innings is just unacceptable. He was really hurt by walks. He would walk one then allow a hit and then at that point he was already in a hole where he could not get out of.
Making the problem worse was the offense that every time they got something going, they would hit in a double play or something that would just kill the ralley. Wright tried to get something started in the ninth to get on the board but he was the only one really thinking about that and the Mets ended up finishing with 2 runs. In fact, at one point 13 Mets were retired in a row, they just went quiet. In fact the only positive thing in the game was Fossum and Stokes who both allowed no runs, although it was too late for the Mets to have a chance, it was nice to see someone throuw the ball quasi effectively.

I am a little behind on my game reviews and recaps so I'm going to knock out the past week one at a time tonight.
On Tuesday the Mets lost their second straight game and it was an excruciating, frustrating loss. Perez started off fairly effective tossing 4 scoreless innings and during that time the Mets were able to score 4 runs. Perez then got really wild, allowed some runs, then walked in a run, then Fossum came out and walked in another run and the game was tied. Then the game was history. The Mets allowed two more runs during the game and lost 6-4. Both of the Mets major problems were exposed in this game. Their starting pitching was terrible again (behind Santana) and wasn't able to protect the lead that the offense gave them. However, the offense isn't off the hook either. They couldn't score after the fourth inning and the first four innings, they could have done a lot more each inning, but they couldn't get the key hits. So both of their weakness shown through and became themes for the rest of the season. The Cards showed why they are a good team and the Mets needed to start winning to make their case that they are a contender. In terms of the pen, Feliciano was good, and he needs to be good for the Mets to compete, but Putz had a hard night as he allowed the two runs that then gave the Cards the win.

The Mets look to hit the breaks tonight as they play the Nationals to work their way back to .500. The Mets are now on a four game slide that is so incredibly frustrating. The Mets will be sending their one consistent starter to the mound today, which of course is Johan Santana who has been the opposite of every other pitcher in the Mets rotation and they will have to face Scott Olsen tonight.
Santana is 2-1 on the year with 19.2 IP with 5 BB and 27 K. The most amazing number so far though has been his 29 K's. Seriously, he is on fire. Last year against the Marlins he went 3-0, with a 2.57 ERA over 21.0 IP, 5 BB, and 18 K. The Mets need Santana right now to stop this slide and just set this team back on the right track. Here are the stats the Marlins have put up on Santana over their carears: Belliard 4-23, 7 K Zimmerman 4-13, HR Willingham 2-8, 2B, HR Kearns 2-9, 2 2B The player I am most worried about is Willingham. He is one of those guys who loves to play against the Mets because he gets into all sorts of key situations and always performs. If the Mets can stay out of those situations tonight, then the Mets will be able to reverse their fortunes, of course, that is contigent on the Mets scoring some runs. The Mets will have to face Olsen who has been struggling so far this year. He is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA as he has given up 15 runs in 15 innings, he walked 7, and struck out 10. Last year in five games he was 0-3 agianst the Mets over 28.0 innings while he allowed 19 runs (6.11 ERA) while walking 7 and striking out 18. Here are the numbers the Mets have put up on Olsen: Reyes 14-35, 4 2B, 3B, HR, 5 RBI Beltran 13-30, 3 2B, 4 HR, 11 RBI Wright 9-32, 4 2B, 3 HR Delgado 7-29, 2B, HR Castillo 3-10, HR The Mets have had pretty lack luster power hitting, which is one of the reasons they have not been scoring runs in bunches. Hopefully if the Mets can turn it on tonight and give themselves a boost they will start to remeber how to win. Look for an aggressive offense tonight. Lets Go Mets! Stop the streak! Beat the Nats! IMPORTANT NOTE: DUE TO A FAMILY EMERGENCY, I HAVE TO POST TOMORROW'S PREVIEW POST A DAY EARLY, THIS IS THE GAME PREVIEW FOR THURSDAY AFTERNOON, THE GAME PREVIEW POST FOR TODAY CAN BE FOUND HERE. THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING.
The Mets and the Cards will be battling it out for the early afternoon game as the Mets send their number 5 guy out, who has been their number two guy, in the form of Livan Hernandez and he will be going against the new ace of the Cards, already making his forth start, Lohse. Now Hernandez has a win in two games so fart this year over 11.2 innings ptiched, a 4.65 ERA, 3BB and 7K. He didn't face the Cards at all last season but in 2007 he got a No Decision (feels awkward typing that, a pitcher recieving nothing), over 7.0 innings of work, allowing 3 runs, no walks and 4 K's. Here is what the Cards have been able to do against Livan: Pujols 8-29, HR Greene 3-20 Molina 2-11 Ludwig 1-4 Duncan 2-3 Livan had a really good start his last time out until he gave up the lead pretty much all at once. This feels like commonsense saying this, but as long as he doesn't hit that wall, or he gets pulled before reaching that wall, then I am not really concerned with the Mets pitching today. The Mets will have to beat up on Lohse to get the win today and I am always worried about that. Although the Mets have been able to do that in the past, sometimes Lohse just comes out and rips the Mets to shreds. He is one of those pitchers that get me very nervous (similar to Josh Johnson, even if the numbers don't support the claim, this is a statement just about nerves). So far this season he is 2-0 over 3 games and 21.0 innings ptiched with a 2.57 ERA, 3BB and 21 K. Impressive Numbers. Last year against the Mets he went 1-1 over 12 IP, 7 ER, 3 BB, and 6 K. Not as impressive numbers. Here is what the Mets have been able to do with Lohse: Beltran 18-34, 3 2B, 4 HR Delgado 7-17, 2B, HR Reyes 4-14, 2B, HR Wright 6-14, 2B, HR Church 5-11, 2B, HR Sheff 3-8, 2 2B, HR The Mets have been able to put up the power numbers on Lohse in the past. Like I said before, the numbers don't justify my nerves about Lohse but they are still there (maybe I'm just really strange, which is a very realistic possibility). Anyway a win today is "crucial" because we want some form of momentum coming together for the series with the Nationals this weekend (then again, how can play be "crucial" in April). Lets Go Mets!

The Mets try to bounce back tonight after last night's loss with a win against the Cards last night. Here is a good trend and a disturbing trend so far. Good Trend: After the Mets drop the opener they win the second game of the series. Disturbing Trend: After winning the second game, they fail to win the rubber game. Anyway, tonight will feature John Maine against 2-0 Pineiro.
Tonigh'ts game is really important because we need to see something out positive out of John Maine. So for this season he is 0-1 over 2 games with a 10.0 IP, 8 ER, 4 BB, 9 K. Last season he lost his only game against the Cards where he went 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 3BB, K. However the year before he won his only start against the Cards where he went 7.0 Innings and allowed no runs, walked 2 and struck out 6. Here are the Cards numbers against Maine: Pujols 4-9, 2HR Duncan 1-6 Greene 2-6 Molina 2-6 The key for the Mets pitching is to not let the Cards rally, to frustrate them. Last night in three consecutive innings they allowed the Cards to load the bases and then allowed the cards to score 2 runs, 2 runs and then no runs. If they can keep them for scoring in those scoring situations, then they can frustrate this offense and lock them down. The Mets will have to battle with Pineiro, who isn't pitching as well as his record of 2-0 suggests. He has 11.2 innings on the season, a 5.40 ERA, 4 BB and 5 K. Last year against the Mets he pitched two games with no decisons in either of them totaling 9.0 innings where he allowed 9 runs, 2 BB, and 6 K. The Mets can hit on him: Delgado 5-17, 2 2B, HR Beltran 3-13, 2B Castillo 3-12 Reyes 6-9, 2 2B, 3B, HR Wright 4-8, 2B In the first four innigns the Mets did a good job getting runs in with 2 outs with RISP. The problem though was in those situations, they could have easily have done more, and that came back to haunt them. The Mets have to get runs in and then keep getting them in. The concept of a rally sometimes escapes this team. If they play the way we all kow they can, mabe they can do it. I really liked how they played more agressive last night, hopefully they can keep that up. Lets go Mets! Put one in the Win Column! Tuesday, April 21

This is a new segment about baseball sites that if its your first time visiting the site, you can kiss the rest of your day good bye because the sites are that interesting. These are the sites that you email to all of your friends and become the sites that you visit at least once a week.
For this entry, I wanted to highlight one of my personal favorites, Uni Watch Blog. It is an amazing site where they just don't focus on baseball but focus on uniforms. They write about old uniforms, new uniforms, uniforms mistakes and so forth (like the big mistake with the Nationals Jerseys last week when two players went out of the field without the O in Nationals). The blog is written mainly by Paul Lukas who is a Mets fan and gives great personal insight in every post no matter what topic it is about. If team logos are something that interest you, then this blog is a place where you will waste a lot of time (For example, they caught a mistake with Pelfrey in the first week of the season where he went out of the field with a jersey without a Mets patch). If the name Paul Lukas sounds familiar to you, that is because he is one of the writers on ESPN's page 2, where he writes about uniforms. I cannot stress enough how interesting this site is. You gotta go visit it.

The Mets open up a quick, one series, three game road trip tonight with the Cardinals as they will go toe to toe with one of the best teams with one of the best hitters in all the land. Tonight is a good opportunity to jump as the Marlins continue to play the surprisingly above .500 Pirates. The Mets will be sending out Perez tonight and he will pitch against Wellemeyer.
Perez started off the season in a terrible way and then in his last start he pitched really well and dropped his ERA from 16 and change to 7 and change (I love stats in the beginning of year). He hasn't faced the Cards since 2007 where he got a no decision after pitching 6.1 innings and allowing 2 runs off of 3 walks and 6 strikeouts. The question then becomes who shows up tonight. By the law of averages, you should be able to flip a coin and determine his performance. Here is what the Cards have been able to do to Ollie over the years: Pujols 10-26, 3 2B, 3B, 3 HR Molina 5-16 Greene 2-9 Duncan 0-3 Thurston 4-4 Ludwig 1-3 I am always worried when we play Pujols. Speaking of which, have you seen the new Sportscenter commericial with him? At first I wasn't a fan but the ending of the commericial made up for it. Anyway the key to playing the Cards is controlling Albert, but not to lose focus on the rest of thier lineup. To win tonight, the Mets might like to try to do something they used to do but havn't for a while which is this really cool concept of when runners, who are on the bases, go across Home Plate in a manner that scores runs. To score tonight they will have to beat up on Wellemeyer who is 1-1 this season in as many games and has a 4.50 ERA. Last season he had a loss against the Mets after 5 innigns of work where he allowed 6 runs, 2 walks and stuck out 2. Here are the numbers the Mets have against him: Beltran 1-8, 2B Reyes 2-9 Wright 5-7, 2 2B, HR Church 2-5, 2B Castro 2-4 Castillo 2-4 Very simple concept tonight, lets score runs and then lets win this game. Lets Go Mets! Monday, April 20

The Mets restated their issues yesterday with failing to complete a sweep for the second time this season, which puts them back at .500 for year. Now its still very early, but I also have this problem where when I expect my team to go somewhere, I practically expect perfection (for example, I was not like this in 2003, or 2004 where it was nice to see wins, but it wasn't expected but really since 2006 I expect wins all the time, hopefully I can get out of the phase in my life soon). Anyway the Mets lost yesterday thanks to one of the two problems they have developed this season.
They either get no starting pitching and score a ton of runs OR They get effective starting pitching, but decide not to score any runs. And its not like the Mets didn't hit yesterday either. They had over 12 hits but they couldn't get runs home which is starting to get really agervating. The hope is though: If you are getting a lot of hits, then it should be just a matter of time until the hits happen in succession of each other and the runs start coming home. They need to figure this out soon because this upcoming series is going to be tough, but its also important because it is a statement series. Also, if they get momentum with the Cardinals, then they should be able to roll over the Nationals, who teams seem to be beating up on this season to get their records up. Meanwhile, we all still wait for the Marlins to run out of gas...I hope that happens soon. Sunday, April 19

213 Miles From Shea has been going through some changes over the last few weeks and the first stage of renovations is pretty much over. If you look along the columns, you will see a couple of new sections and a few updates. Starting on the left, I finally updated the Get To Know a Prospect Section with Brad Holt and Dilon Gee. Below that I added two sections the first one that groups all of the posts about MLB Drafts together, and the one below that all about the Battle of the Mets Blogs. Finally on the left side, the Link List has been updated on the bottom of the page.
On the right side of the page, the major, major change is the inclusion of Facebook Links and Twitter Links. Please go to both! Become a fan on Facebook and follow the blog on Twitter! (I'm new to Twitter so its gonna take me some time to get used to using it). Below that section I added the Ball Hype button. On the top of the left column is a whole section for information about the blog, about me and about adverstising. Finally on the left side, I posted all of the 2009 Preseason Articles in a group. Later on this season the blog will be going throug a second set of renovations including new graphics and maybe a new layout all together, so stayed tuned and thanks for reading! |
